AMMA does not take a position in electoral campaigns. Yet, as we welcome Vice President Kamala Harris into the 2024 presidential race, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on this Administration’s commitment to revitalizing American manufacturing, particularly in the medical supply sector.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the dangers of relying heavily on foreign suppliers for critical medical supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE). Harris has been a vocal advocate for reducing this dependency. She previously emphasized that “we cannot afford to be dependent on foreign nations for the critical goods we need during times of crisis, especially for medical supplies and PPE.” (White House Statement, July 28, 2021)
AMMA is optimistic that Harris’s vision will continue to align closely with the Biden administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster domestic manufacturing and enlist government and the healthcare sectors as critical partners to ensure a resilient PPE and medical supply sector.
President Joe Biden has taken significant steps to ensure the success of American workers and companies, including implementing tariffs on Chinese PPE and medical supplies. This meaningful international trade action protects American manufacturers from unfair competition and helps ensure the availability and reliability of these critical goods.
In her advocacy, Harris has consistently highlighted the dual benefits of strengthening U.S. manufacturing: economic resilience and national security.
In a May 16 statement this year, Harris added, “Investing in American manufacturing is not just about producing more goods here at home; it’s about creating good-paying jobs and building a resilient economy.”
The Biden-Harris administration’s focus on rebuilding the domestic manufacturing base, especially for essential sectors like medical supplies, has been a crucial step toward economic recovery and preparedness.
As Harris enters the presidential race, AMMA encourages her to broaden her commitment to these issues. Our nation remains concerned about economic opportunity, national security, and public health. We look forward to seeing her policies develop and thank President Biden for his unwavering support of American manufacturing, which has been instrumental in our efforts.
